8a -Assessing with UDL in an AI-Powered World

How can we reliably assess our students in a world where artificial intelligence can write their essays and exams for them? We as post-pandemic educators are living and working in a landscape that has abruptly changed the game yet again, and we must respond in our assessment design. The third principle of UDL, Multiple Means of Action & Expression, states that diverse learners should be afforded choice in how they demonstrate their mastery of learning outcomes. At first glance, this ideal seems untenable. How can we offer our learners choice when they can just choose a path that will allow them to rely on AI? There is a way to balance these two imperatives. This session outlines a path to designing practical alternative assessments that offer choice and flexibility to students, while also responding to the risks, realities—and, yes, opportunities—posed by current and emerging technology.
