6c -Teaching and Learning Activities: The Missing Piece to a Fully Aligned Cyclical Review
Brian Nairn and Lindi Prendi, St. Clair College
Many of us are familiar with the concepts of Constructive Alignment (Biggs, 1996) or Integrated Course Design (Fink, 2003) when it comes to designing courses – where the learning outcomes, assessments, and teaching and learning activities are all intentionally designed to relate to one another.
At our institution, we are now one step closer to incorporating all three of these components as part of our cyclical review with the recent inclusion of standardizing our approach to tracking teaching and learning activities on our course outlines.
An analysis of every course outline and the free-form text entries describing the teaching and learning activities has been boiled down to a list of 18 activities, and we are now in the process of updating the outlines through cyclical review to include these standardized options.
The next steps in future reviews will be to include mapping of these teaching and learning activities to course learning outcomes to allow us to objectively review the entire alignment within each course.
In this session we will discuss our process for deciding on the list of teaching and learning activities and our next steps to aligning the entire curriculum through cyclical review.
