CDAG: Refocus
3a – Experiential Learning: When Operations Meets Pedagogy
Brian Nairn and Lindi Prendi, St. Clair College
One of the challenges of implementing experiential learning, particularly work-integrated learning or co-op placements, is finding the balance between the ideal pedagogical approach and the operational feasibility of the pedagogy.
At our institution, we recently completed a pilot project with one of the Schools to address this issue at the Program level. Working closely with our Career Services unit and Administration, we undertook a standardization of course outlines to find a balance between what Employers could realistically assess, both in terms of Course Learning Outcomes and Essential Employability Skills, the roles and responsibilities of Career Services as it relates to student reflections, and how much contact time with faculty (if any) can be expected.
In this session we will discuss our approach to this challenge and the solution that was ultimately implemented.
