GenAI as a Tool to Improve Learning Equity: A Case Study
Date: Wednesday, January 17, 2024
Time: 1pm-2pm (EST)
Presenter: Amanda Baker Robinson

Emerging technologies may pose promising avenues for reducing barriers to learning and improving equity in higher education. Amanda Baker Robinson’s forthcoming case study from the International Journal of Student Success analyzes the integration of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools including ChatGPT and Leonardo.AI in the ELD 3073 – Training, Development, and Storyboarding course, which is part of Lambton College’s E-Learning Design and Training Development program. Ethical and critical use of genAI will be threaded through many learning activities, including the major course project—a real-world eLearning module that students create under the supervision of the course instructor and a Subject Matter Expert. The case study will compare learners’ outcomes to previous classes and analyze student feedback on their use of genAI for learning. The outcomes of students with significant written language, technical, and cultural familiarity barriers will be featured in order to explore whether ethical use of genAI improves equity for these students specifically. The case study will conclude with a discussion of possibilities, limitations, and considerations for directing learners to engage ethically with genAI tools in the course of their learning.
