3c – The Indigenous Perspectives Designation
Elizabeth Stone, Fleming College
The Indigenous Perspectives Designation (IPD) – a Fleming College Credential. The programs that offer an IPD provide experiential learning Indigenous activities and discipline-specific Indigenous curriculum in each semester, beyond what is required in the two mandatory general education subjects: Introduction to Indigenous Studies and Introduction to Indigenous Knowledges. Upon completion, Programs can offer this credential option to students. At the time of graduation, students with an IPD certificate will have a strong foundational basis in Indigenous studies, and a designation that will be in demand as they start their careers. An imperative piece of the Indigenous Perspectives Designation is community engagement, where students respectfully attend and participate in appropriate Indigenous events and initiatives. This gives students the opportunity to participate in activities that promote respectful relationships, applied learning and professional partnerships while being supported by Indigenous faculty and community members. This session will guide participants through the IPD process from conception, implementation, its inclusion in New Program Development, Annual & Cyclical Reviews and finally summarize the experience of its first inclusion in the College Quality Assurance Audit Process.
