3a – Teaching Students to Articulate Fanshawe’s Job Skills for the Future

In 2019, Fanshawe launched the College-wide curriculum initiative, Job Skills for the Future (JSF), with the goals of teaching students the transferable skills they need for the workplace and preparing them to articulate those skills to potential employers. As the team who led the implementation of JSF, we presented to CDAG in 2019 about Phase 1 of the initiative when we workshopped the JSF with every program team at Fanshawe to integrate the skills in all post-secondary programs. In 2021, we returned to CDAG to share updates about the project: during Phase 2 of the initiative, we built customizable lesson plans and teaching materials that faculty could embed into their curriculum when teaching about the JSF. In this third presentation to CDAG, we report on the findings of a research project conducted in Phase 3
as a way to measure the success of the JSF initiative. Working with faculty who used the customizable JSF lessons in their courses, we surveyed students to explore how their knowledge and confidence levels regarding the skills had changed after engaging in the lessons. We will present the research question, methodology, and analysis, and discuss the research project’s primary finding: according to students’ self-proclaimed confidence levels, the researcher’s analysis of the quality of student answers, and faculty’s impressions of the students’ learning, delivering the curriculum materials developed in Phase 2 of the JSF initiative did improve students’ knowledge of a given Job Skill, and their ability to articulate it.
