CDAG Member Profile May 2025

Name: Alex Davis
Role:  Teaching and Learning Specialist, Centre of Academic Excellence and Lifelong Learning
College & City:   Canadore College, North Bay

If someone were to visit your college/city, suggest three “not to miss” sites.

We have a beautiful trail system at our College Drive campus with beautiful scenery including an observation point for Lake Nipissing and Duchesney Falls. In the summer, the beach waterfront and marina are places you don’t want to miss. Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t recommend stopping by our CAELL office for some smiles!

How long have you been a member of CDAG and what is one thing you most appreciate about the organization?

I have been a member of CDAG since entering my current role with Canadore College nearly two years ago. I greatly appreciate CDAG’s professional development opportunities and supportive members!

If you could give one piece of advice to someone new to curriculum development, what would it be?

Listen to the feedback and advice that colleagues provide, as hearing different perspectives truly helps strengthen any type of project. At least for myself, I tend to get stuck in my head and need other perspectives to loosen my self-imposed blinders.

If you could design a course on any unusual topic, what would it be?

I’m very interested in fungi and appreciate environmental roles of fungi, but I think it would be fun to design a course about historic and current cultural understandings of fungi.

What is the quirkiest or most meaningful piece of feedback you’ve ever received in your career?

This comes as a student years (eons) ago when I had to write a 6-page essay. On the front page, my professor wrote, “14 pages!? Does your PC have a word counter? EDIT RUTHLESSLY!!!” It taught me that being effective means being concise.

If you could invite any living or historical figure to guest lecture for a course or keynote, who would it be and why?

I’m living it! As someone who has enjoyed TED Talks for as long as I can remember, I am excited for TED founder, Richard Saul Wurman’s closing session at Canadore College’s upcoming SoTL Symposium.

[Canadore’s SoTL Symposium will take place on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Visit the SoTL event page for details and registration.
