CDAG: Back to the Future
Plenary Session 2 Re-storying the Future, Re-playing the Past, Re-discovering the Present
Dr. Christine Boyko-Head
“Education is facing a crisis unlike anything in decades, and it reaches into almost everything that educators do”. This statement from the Washington Post (Jan. 2022) captures the worldwide perception of failing educational systems. Our learning, working, living environments were radically disrupted with increased risks and decreased rewards during COVID-19. That said, many of these risks pre-dated the pandemic, and it took this global disaster to spotlight issues of empathy, equity and ethicality in education and other sectors in society.
Possibly, some of the negative attitudes toward education may be the result of a universal problem: the perceived impossibility for humans to predict the future – the future of work, the future of society, the future of education, the future of the individual. But, what if . . . we took a shot, anyways?
What if… we maximize our return on risk by re-valuing a return to ritual? What if. . . we minimize the familiar and maximize the diverse in order to play with agility within ambiguous situations? What if. . . we rehearse key employability skills that were enriched with essential adjectives such as empathetic communication, equitable collaboration and ethical creative-critical thinking? What if. . . we decolonize time to nurture the social-emotional relationships learners need?
This interactive presentation hopes to re-story the future by re-playing the past, and thereby revealing the present, or the gift, of learning and teaching.
