2024 CDAG Award of Excellence Winner: Melissa Barnard

The CDAG Executive is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2024 Award of Excellence to Melissa Barnard, Curriculum Consultant, Fanshawe College! The Award of Excellence will be presented at the at CDAG’s 2024 Virtual Conference in November 2024.

A heartfelt thank you to Melissa who has tirelessly worked to advance curriculum design and development for both the Fanshawe College community and the CAAT provincial community. As the recent chair of the Communications Committee, Melissa devoted many volunteer hours to building and maintaining the CDAG website with unwavering attention to detail and ongoing commitment to its content currency.  The website is heavily visited and offers CDAG members an easy one-stop location for professional development information plus offers a rich repository of collegial-shared curriculum resources. Melissa has also been instrumental in establishing the CDAG email platform and other technologies that are used daily to keep our volunteer committees functioning and members informed and engaged.

As further evidence of her innovative practice, Melissa is the primary author of a textbook called The CODE Book for Course Development. To create this resource, she completed exhaustive literature reviews and consulted with many diverse internal and external parties. The result is a comprehensive text detailing best practices for curriculum development that is rich with instructions, tools and resources, templates, and exemplars that guide new and seasoned faculty in creating quality curriculum that follow the principles of constructive alignment. Melissa has presented this resource at various related conferences, and her goal is to create the next version in Pressbooks, an Open Education Resource (OER) platform. Fanshawe already freely shares The CODE Book with colleagues in the sector but moving it to an OER will further enable that resource sharing.

Finally, Melissa’s recent work to redesign and implement Fanshawe’s new Program Development process has touched almost every academic and service area of the college and again, her impressive bandwidth and attention to detail have been put to valuable use with the provision of extensive process-related guides and resources that the folks at Fanshawe use to make program development happen.

Thank you, Melissa for all you do!
